Kentlands Citizens Assembly How this community is making positive environmental progress through its dedication to green initiatives. n award-winning, neo-traditional managed community in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Kentlands Citizens Assembly was one of the first pedestrian-oriented mixed-use developments in the area. The community consists of approximately 1,800 homes, including single-family homes, urban cottages, townhouses, garage townhouses, rental apartments, and condominiums, across various sub-neighborhoods. It also boasts more than one million square feet of office and commercial development. In addition to its popular newspaper and high resident engagement through various clubs, organizations, and athletic teams, Kentlands Citizens Assembly prioritizes sustainability. The community has implemented a composting program, applied organic turf, installed a geothermal system in the clubhouse, and much more. Impressed by their environmentally-conscious initiatives, Sustainable Maryland selected Kentlands Citizens Assembly to be part of its certification program. The program is designed for municipalities in Maryland that want to go green, save money, and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term. Kentlands Citizens Assembly and two other communities will form "Green Teams" to coordinate with Gaithersburg's Environmental Action Committee and create a Residential Sustainability Action Framework to help guide local sustainability efforts.
