Less Stress • Create a spending plan. Make a list of who you're shopping for, think of gift ideas before purchasing, and settle on the amount you want to spend—then stick to it. A plan will help you get shopping done faster and reduce impulse buying. • Have a single source of money. It's best to use cash when buying gifts, but if a credit card is your only option, use the same one for all your shopping. Multiple cards can lead to overspending. • Host a gift exchange. Gift exchanges cut down on the number of gifts everyone needs to buy. Decide on a price limit, shop for your chosen person, and savor the saved time, money, and stress. More Joy • Make homemade gifts. Homemade gifts are creative, personal, fun, and often inexpensive. Hand-crafted ornaments, candles, quilts, soaps, and cards are tried-and-true crowd-pleasers. • Shop small. Supporting small and local businesses means supporting someone's dream and livelihood. While you may not find the assortment of products available at big-box stores, the items stocked usually include one-of-a-kind treasures at a reasonable price. Plus, you'll keep money in the community and probably encounter an easier shopping experience. • Prioritize presence over presents. Presents are great but being present with your loved ones is even better (and free!). Instead of a gift, offer to babysit, lend a hand in the kitchen, or engage a group in a game. Your actions are much more meaningful than an object wrapped in a box. MONEY From gifts and flights to new outfits and hosting supplies, holiday costs can add up quickly. Here's how to spend mindfully without turning into a Scrooge.
