French decor takes the same laissez-faire approach that French women take toward their style. It's effortlessly chic, casually elegant, and leans for eclectic over carefully curated. Celebrating their rich history and culture, French homes are filled with a fusion of eras and strike a balance between sophistication and comfort. France MIX & MATCH PIECES The French are masters at seamlessly blending contemporary and antique pieces. Instead of buying new, enjoy the hunt for decor or furniture at a flea market or thrift store and weave vintage scores in with present-day finds. For example, juxtaposing an ornate 18th-century armoire next to a modern chair gives the sought-after mix-and-match French appearance. GL AMOROUS TOUCHES Some French people and landmarks are recognized for their excessive and ostentatious attributes (Versailles and Louis XIV, anyone?); however, French homes are usually quite conservative with humble charm. Stick to subdued color schemes with just an occasional hint of glitz and glamour, like a gilded mirror, velvet drapes, tufted headboard, or crystal chandelier. ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS French people live in old buildings with quirky layouts—and they embrace and preserve the special architectural details that come along. Call attention to your home's defining features, or install crown molding, ceiling medallions, paneling, herringbone-pattern floors, wooden beams, and wainscoting for character and refined romance. DISTRESSED FURNITURE While many Americans strive for perfection, the French prefer a more lived-in look. They believe every piece should tell a story, so well-loved age-speckled mirrors, distressed tables, and metals with a slight patina are all valued by the French.
