Our favorite festive rom-coms. Love Actually (2003) Arguably the best holiday rom-com, Love Actually follows nine different couples as their lives and relationships intertwine in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The star-studded cast includes Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and Kiera Knightley. As some couples grow closer, others drift further apart, triggering a series of funny, weepy, and endearing moments. A movie packed with magic and heart, you'll gain a new appreciation for those you hold dear—and Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You." While You Were Sleeping (1995) While You Were Sleeping is a touching holiday romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock as Lucy, a lonely transit worker who rescues a handsome stranger, played by Peter Gallagher, from an accident. When his family mistakes her for his fiancée, Lucy is captivated by comfort, joy, and unexpected love. With its charming mix of humor, romance, and fairytale delight, this fantastic flick has spurred oohhs and awwws from moviegoers for decades. When Harry Met Sally (1989) The motion picture that put the holiday rom-com genre on the map, When Harry Met Sally is about two friends who test the question: can men and women be platonic friends? Spanning several years in New York City, the movie depicts the friendship between Harry, played by Billy Crystal, and Sally, played by Meg Ryan, evolving into something more. A film that's filled with memorable quotes like "I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible," you're sure to feel all the warm fuzzies this season calls for. Love Hard (2021) Although dating apps have helped millions of people find love, they still require due diligence. In Love Hard, main character Natalie finally matches with a handsome stranger she connects with, but—as is the case with many dating app stories—the guy isn't real. She's been catfished. The film trails Natalie as she navigates a blossoming friendship with her catfisher, Josh, in his hometown during the holidays. Showing the chemistry that derives from their in-person relationship, this pick is quirky, sweet, and relatable. PASS THE TIME Beyond the twinkling lights and holly jolly gatherings, people are cherishing a time-honored tradition by curling up with a classic holiday romantic comedy. Offering heartwarming stories and merry encounters, these movies beautifully capture the season's essence. Turn up the heat and pour a cup of good cheer—these are four of our favorite festive rom-coms. WONDER & Awww COMING HOME MAGAZINE 13
