ast year, as my family headed to
the airport for our annual ski
trip, an inconvenient notice flashed
across our phone screens: flight
cancelled. To make matters worse,
every flight that day—and the several
days that followed—were fully booked.
Having already invested a lot in this
vacation and pressed for time, we
decided to drive to the mountains.
What I thought was a guaranteed
way to ruin the holidays became an
unexpected chance to reconnect.
I look back on those 18 hours on
the road quite fondly; they're a true
reminder of what the holidays are all
about: being with the people you love.
This issue is a toast to the magic we
make with those we hold dear. Our
readers share their festive fails (P. 24)
and how they keep winter whimsical
for their kids (P. 29). Plus, we feature
delicious family cookie recipes (P. 30),
creative hostess gifts (P. 12), tips for
shopping small (P. 14), and over 25 new
traditions for you to try (P. 16).
However you celebrate, I wish you a
season as meaningful as the people you
spend it with.
