PINCH OF GOODNESS Birds, fish, and butterflies travel big. During migration, millions of hummingbirds, cranes, and shorebirds head north from Mexico and Central and South America to breed. Fish, like salmon, herring, and shad, swim upstream to spawn in rivers of the Pacific Northwest and Atlantic coast, and monarch butterflies leave their winter home in Michoacan, Mexico. "The maple sap is running!" is the first call that spring has arrived in maple syrup-producing regions. Only from late February to early April do maple trees offer their signature delicacy. With a watery consistency and mild sweetness, sap flows through the inside of the tree trunk, allowing it to be collected or consumed immediately. Frogs sing to an enchanted crowd. As ponds and wetlands thaw, frogs and toads emerge from their winter hiding spots. Spring's first warm rain beckons a symphony of frog calls, croaks, and trills. In an effort to find a mate, frogs host a lively concert in the eastern United States and Canada. Trees unveil their beautiful blooms. March and April are the most vibrant months for many florals. On the cobblestone streets of Mexico City, Puebla, and Guadalajara, Mexico, jacaranda trees bloom with stunning purple flowers. And in Washington, D.C., cherry blossoms burst, decorating the nation's capital with tones of soft white, pink, and purple. Auroras light the night's sky. Displaying a rainbow of colors, the northern lights illuminate a dark sky. Creating waves of greens, blues, purples, and pinks, auroras are geomagnetic spectacles that can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Best visible on long, clear nights, auroras are prevalent in February, March, and April, and can happen on any given day. 28 COMING HOME MAGAZINE
