Tennis is a racket-and-ball sport played on
rectangular courts made of clay, concrete,
asphalt, or grass. A standard tennis court is 78
feet long and 26 or 36 feet wide, depending on
the format. Think bigger than pickleball, but
smaller than volleyball. The lines on the court
mark the baseline, service boxes, and center line.
Tennis' origins trace back to the 12th century
when the French played a handball game
named jeu de paume ("game of the palm").
This evolved into the sport of tennis we see
today, where matches are played between
individuals (singles) or pairs (doubles).
