COMING HOME MAGAZINE 7 CABOT TRAIL Location: Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada Distance: 185 miles Skill: Expert Cabot Trail is among the most renowned coastal cycling routes in Canada. This 185-mile loop around the northern tip of Cape Breton Island can be completed in three to five days. Named after explorer John Cabot, riders will encounter a rich Gaelic culture, welcoming fishing villages, and breathtaking sights. But be prepared for a dramatic elevation profile. You'll face four key climbs and exhilarating descents near the Atlantic Ocean. FLORIDA KEYS OVERSEAS HERITAGE TRAIL Location: Key Largo to Key West, FL Distance: 106 miles Skill: Beginner The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail (FKOHT) connects cyclists to the mainland via pathways built next to car lanes and historic bridges. Putting you over the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, this trail is extraordinary. The FKOHT has a gentle, flat path, so it's accessible to all skill levels. Along the way, you can camp, snorkel, fish, and soak in the relaxed vibe of the Keys. OREGON COAST BIKE ROUTE Location: Astoria to Brookings, OR Distance: 370 miles Skill: Intermediate The Oregon Coast Bike Route traces much of Highway 101 near the Columbia River. On your journey, you'll see a wide range of ecosystems, from sea stacks to forests and rocky headlands. The route boasts a 370-mile-long trail, rolling hills, and numerous short but steep climbs. It's worth the effort if you want an intimate connection with nature. LAKE TAHOE LOOP Location: Around Lake Tahoe Distance: 72 miles Skill: Expert If you're an expert biker looking for a single-day quest, you can tackle the Lake Tahoe Loop in about five to six hours. As you ride, you'll circumnavigate the largest alpine lake on the North American continent. While the distance is manageable, the elevation is mighty. Not only will you climb 4,000 feet around the lake, but the entire ride is also above 6,200 feet. However, the legendary views amid towering pines can't be beat.
