Smar t ROAD TRIP TIPS Follow these rules of the road to stay safe—and sane. STAY FUELED. Never let your gas tank get below one-third full. BUCKLE IN. Wearing your seatbelt is the law in most areas. SHARE THE ROAD. Know rights of way for truckers, motorcyclists, bikers, and walkers. DIVVY UP DRIVING. Rotate drivers every few hours; distracted and drowsy driving is dangerous. BRING A MAP. Or download offline maps—cell service can get spotty. WATCH THE WEATHER. Weather can be unpredictable; download reliable weather apps and program alerts. STOP OFTEN. Get out and stretch your legs every three to four hours. APPLY SUNSCREEN. Side and rear windows don't effectively block harmful UVA rays. WEAR LAYERS. A long ride can often go from too hot to too cold. PACK PLENTY OF WATER. Staying hydrated is important; plus, you'll need it if you get stuck. PREPARE FOR FRICTION. People get cranky—don't take it personally. USE CRUISE CONTROL. Speeding only shaves minutes off your drive. ASSIGN ROLES. Decide who picks the music, sets the temperature, and decides on dinner. BE FLEXIBLE. Leave a little leeway to stop at roadside attractions. KEEP LOVED ONES IN THE LOOP. Share your itinerary, general route, and check-in times. 22 COMING HOME MAGAZINE
