hese days, it seems like everywhere
we look, the past finds a way to thread
itself into the present. Needlepoint hoops
sit beside laptops; Polaroid photographs
line LED-lit walls; vinyl records spin beneath
smart speakers; and beloved 80s reruns
light up our screens. We're living in a
high-tech world with a future that promises
greater efficiency and speed, yet we crave
the comfort of the slow, steady pace of
yesteryear.
This sentimental longing shapes our summer
issue. In honor of the iconic eras that made
us, we're showcasing the quintessential
nostalgic experience: the road trip. A classic
rite of passage, road trips conjure memories
from simpler days. They offered us an
escape, a space to bond with siblings, and
the opportunity for boundless adventure.
In the coming pages, we share a
comprehensive road trip guide with the
ultimate destination suggestions, a packing
list, car games, and more (P. 16). We also
serve the inside scoop on ice cream's sweet
beginnings (P. 28), hilarious dad jokes
(P. 31), and recap the celebrations marking
America's semiquincentennial (P. 24). Plus,
you'll discover peachy-keen recipes (P. 12)
and get your kicks learning the game of
soccer (P. 32).
Thank you for reading Coming Home.
We're thrilled to have you along for the ride!
