Planning & BUDGETING A remarkable retreat doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag, but a little planning is worth its weight in Yelp reviews. GAS Get a fuel estimate with this formula: total miles ÷ your car's MPG × average gas price. ACCOMMODATIONS Plan how much you'd like to spend on hotels, vacation rentals, or campgrounds for each night of your vacay. FOOD & DRINK Budget for on-the-road meals, including groceries, restaurants, fast food, gas station snacks, alcohol, and other refreshments. FUN & EXCURSIONS You should have a general idea of the activities you want to do at your final destination or on stops along the way. Factor in entry fees, parking, tips, and permits. EXTRAS Set aside cash for miscellaneous items, like tolls, souvenirs, and gifts. ROADSIDE EMERGENCIES Have money available for tow trucks, speeding tickets, and roadside service. Vehicle PREPARATION Nothing derails a road trip faster than a surprise "check engine" light. A week or two before departure, schedule a quick inspection with a mechanic, or run through these maintenance to-dos on your own. TIRES Check tire pressure and inspect tread (don't forget the spare). FLUIDS Top off coolant, windshield washer fluid, engine oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and other oils. ENGINE & BATTERY Get an oil change, inspect hoses and belts, and assess the battery. VISIBILITY Confirm that the headlights and taillights work properly, and replace old wiper blades. SAFETY & COMFORT Test AC, alignment, steering, and suspension. EMERGENCY KIT Build a kit with jumper cables, flashlights, flares, first-aid supplies, a tire pressure gauge, a multi-tool, a seatbelt cutter, and a phone charger. FILTERS Change the cabin, fuel, and air filters. 20 COMING HOME MAGAZINE
