VALUE-ADD Popping up in communities near and far, solar panels are changing how homes are powered. Charged directly from the sun, they send electricity to appliances, so you rely less on the electric company. Read on as we shine a light on your most pressing solar panel questions. How Do Solar Panels Work? Just like smartphones and computer chips, solar panels are made from semiconductor materials wrapped in glass. They use photovoltaic (PV) technology to convert sunlight into electricity. When the PV cells in the panel absorb photons of sunlight, electrons shift and create electrical charges that flow through the panel's circuit. It's that current of electricity that powers devices, charges batteries, or supplies an electric grid. What Are the Different Types? Monocrystalline panels are considered top-of-the-line. Made from one crystal of high-grade silicon, they're stronger, more efficient, and work better than others. The downside? They're pricey. A mid-range option, polycrystalline panels are assembled from several pieces of silicon fragments, sometimes using what's left over from monocrystalline panels. They're less potent than the latter but are usually more affordable. Thin-film panels are composed of many layers of light-absorbing elements, like amorphous silicon and gallium arsenide, which don't work as well as the silicon used in higher-grade panels. As the least efficient variety, they're often used on things like RVs and boats. What Are the Biggest Perks? Their environmental impact! Because solar energy is a renewable resource, it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save water, and improve air quality. Plus, they can help lower your monthly utility bill. By generating your own power or hosting a solar panel system and buying back the electricity at a discounted rate, you keep more money in your pocket. How Do I Take Care of Them? Solar panels need regular maintenance. To keep yours in top shape, periodically clear them of debris, clean them with water and a microfiber cloth, and monitor energy output to ensure they're functioning correctly. If you need a hand, hire a professional to manage inspections, repairs, and maintenance. Can I Install Them Myself ? Not always. Solar panels are regulated in many neighborhoods. Always check your community's governing documents and get the necessary approvals and permits before installing. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SOLAR PANELS. SOLAR PANEL 101 COMING HOME MAGAZINE 9
