What factors do you consider when planning a landscape design? Sun and shade are the first things we consider. We have to take into account how much sun or shade an area gets, as certain plants require full or partial sun, and others need full or partial shade. Then, we inspect irrigation and other watering systems to confirm adequate coverage. And finally, we consider the budget. Budget plays a huge role in what types of plants our clients get and the overall design. However, just because someone has a conservative budget doesn't mean their results won't be beautiful—we'll simply use less expensive plants that have the same effect. What mistakes do you see people make when they design their own landscaping? Not doing research beforehand and rushing a landscaping project to completion. Homeowners often head to their local hardware store and buy plants they like. However, the majority of hardware stores are national, and the tags with care instructions are the same on every single plant, regardless of location. Plants are unique to growing zones, and many homeowners don't do their research about what growing zone they live in and what works there. Luckily, finding out is pretty easy—a quick web search of your ZIP code can provide you with all this information. Additionally, most homeowners rush the landscaping process. It's necessary to understand that completing a project in one day or even in one weekend isn't realistic. Demolition, site preparation, and plant installation take time. So, if you're doing your own landscaping, take your time and do it correctly. Do you have any tips to help homeowners maintain their professionally-landscaped lawns? If your lawn is professionally landscaped, proper care is absolutely crucial. Preserve your space by following the landscape designer's watering and fertilizing recommendations—they're essential to survival. Landscaping is a significant investment, and watering and fertilizing will ensure it continues to thrive. What are the biggest trends in landscape design right now? With the COVID pandemic, people were spending a lot of time outside. And because of that, they really capitalized on their landscaping and tried to make their outdoor space more livable and enjoyable. So, clients have been building decks, fire pits, grill areas, etc., and they want their landscaping and plants to fit with these structures. At the end of the day, trends come and go, but people want something that's appealing and soothing. I'm always amazed at how much joy and peace you get from quality landscaping. It's calming when you can go into your yard and see that everything is organized, lush, and aesthetically pleasing. How can I find a local landscape designer? The best way to find a landscape designer is by word of mouth. Ask your friends and family members who they've used and if they've been happy with their work. The second-best option is to visit a nursery and ask the employees for a recommendation. Nursery employees talk to landscape designers every day, and should be able to find someone for your project. Look at years of experience and examples of previous work, too. Pictures are great, but if you can, drive by one of the properties they've designed and check it out for yourself. 3 4 5 6 7 ABOUT JOSEPH REED & LONE STAR LANDSCAPES Joseph Reed is the owner and operator of Lone Star Landscapes, a Dallas-based, full-service lawn and landscaping company.
