All-Natural Pest Prevention Keeping mosquitoes at bay without the harsh sprays. The season of outdoor fun has officially landed—but so have the unwelcomed mosquitoes that come with it. These little guys love to hang out in the same places you do, like the park, in your backyard, and by the pool, and can easily put a damper on your day. Try these all-natural preventative methods to keep the tiny pests away this summer. SPRAY THE MOSQUITO HANGOUT WITH VINEGAR. A pantry staple that keeps on giving, vinegar can help shoo away bugs thanks to its overpowering smell. Apple cider vinegar works on its own, and white vinegar should be mixed with one-part vinegar to three-parts water for the same benefits. Spray the area where mosquitoes like to gather, and yourself for extra measure. USE CINNAMON TO SPICE THINGS UP. Containing eugenol, a compound commonly found in insect-proofing solutions, the spice's powdered texture and fragrant aroma stop bugs from sticking around. Sprinkle powdered cinnamon on mosquito hot spots or steep cinnamon sticks in the microwave with about one tablespoon of water for 15 seconds to enhance its scent, then place the zapped sticks near your resting spot. LET SMELLY PLANTS DO THE JOB. While mosquitoes love flowers and floral scents, there are buds they simply can't stand. Consider placing potted plants that smell great to you and terrible to mosquitoes, like lavender, citronella grass, and marigolds, in and around the areas you frequent. REACH FOR THE COFFEE (AGAIN). Coffee is the answer to almost anything. And for a chemical-free way to repel mosquitoes, you can burn coffee grounds. Pour dry coffee grounds into a bowl or on a flat surface, burn them outside like you would incense, and watch your worries fly away. GET SOME AIR CIRCULATING. According to a Consumer Reports test, an outdoor fan reduces mosquito landings by 45 to 65 percent for people sitting close. Running a fan makes it hard for the lightweight critters to fly against a steady breeze, and disperses mosquito-drawing carbon dioxide emitted by humans. START AN HERB GARDEN. Mark "natural bug repellant" as another motivator for planting herbs ASAP. Not only will fresh herbs like basil, rosemary, mint, and lemongrass take your weekly cuisine to another level, but planting them outside will also deter any pesky bugs that like to feast on you. CHOMP ON FRESH FOODS. Various fruits and vegetables have valuable powers that magically ward off minuscule bugs. Cut up produce like garlic, onions, lemons, oranges, grapefruit, and tomatoes and position them nearby for a clear and present no-fly zone. 28
