Vinyl Created using several layers of synthetic materials like PVC, vinyl flooring mimics the appearance of wood, stone, and tile. It's fully waterproof, great for high-traffic areas, and comes in sheets, interlocking planks, or adhesive tiles that can be installed over existing floors. Unfortunately, vinyl can be difficult to remove and repair, may dent or tear, and doesn't add much value to your home. BEST FOR: Kitchens, garages, basements, and commercial spaces Hardwood Solid hardwood floors are made from a single plank of lumber (usually maple, walnut, or oak), while manufactured selections are made from layers of boards bonded together. A centuries-old option, solid hardwoods are durable, sophisticated, and can be refinished to extend usability. However, they're expensive and prone to moisture damage, dents, scratches, and staining. BEST FOR: Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and home offices Laminate Laminate gets its name from merging, or "laminating," layered materials like melamine resin and fiberboard. Although typically designed to resemble authentic wood flooring, it's inexpensive and easier to install and maintain, making it ideal for DIYers. Be careful, though; laminate lasts only 10 to 12 years, can buckle, and doesn't always accurately simulate natural materials. BEST FOR: Living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways Tile Tile flooring is made from stone, ceramic, or porcelain pieces arranged and set with mortar, adhesive, or grout. Available in endless colors and patterns, tile offers numerous décor possibilities. It's tough, water- and stain-resistant, and low maintenance. But it can be costly, tricky to install, and feel cold or slippery underfoot. BEST FOR: Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and mudrooms Carpet Carpet is a tufted, cushioned flooring that uses natural or synthetic fibers, like wool, nylon, or polyester. Its soft texture gives homes a warm and cozy feeling. Despite being susceptible to stains, fading, and trapped odors, allergens, and dirt, carpet is customizable and budget-friendly. It can also help insulate a space and reduce noise transmission between floors and rooms. BEST FOR: Bedrooms, media rooms, and lounge spaces VALUE-ADD Flooring options to fit your lifestyle.
