Ways to keep your furnace in top shape. HEAT CHECK Swap out filters. The cleaner your air filters, the less time and energy your furnace needs to heat up. Generally, you should switch filters every three months. If you have pets or live in a place with excessive airborne pollutants, consider more frequent changes for improved air quality and efficiency. Clean vents and registers. Use a vacuum to remove dust and dirt from your vents and registers once a year. When left unclean, they can recirculate contaminants, cause uneven heat distribution, and shorten the lifespan of your furnace. Clear the surrounding area. All objects should be stored at least three feet away from the furnace. Nearby boxes, debris, and items can be a fire hazard and interfere with operation. The same goes for outdoor HVAC systems; dispose of any bushes, tall grass, and vegetation that can obstruct air flow or catch fire. Install carbon monoxide monitors. Fuel-burning furnaces naturally produce carbon monoxide, which can be fatal at high concentrations. Install carbon monoxide detectors near your furnace and on every floor of your home, test them regularly, and replace batteries as needed. Listen for loud noises. Your furnace will let you know when it needs some TLC—you just have to listen. These sounds may indicate deeper problems that demand immediate attention: • Scratching: Troubles with the blower wheel may sound like nails on a chalkboard. • Screeching: A high-pitched sound usually points to motor complications or a worn fan belt. • Slapping: This often means something is caught in the fan blades. • Banging: Minor bangs and pops come with wear and tear, but louder noises may signal combustion issues. Bring in the pros. For extra peace of mind, call a professional for an inspection before winter. They can clean the unit, assess key components, optimize your thermostat, and perform other essential maintenance tasks. UPKEEP COMING HOME MAGAZINE 35
