The Semiquincentennial, or America250, marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. “52 Weeks of Firsts”

As the birthplace of independence, you can expect Philadelphia to have a spectacular celebration. The “52 Weeks of Firsts” is a year-long campaign that promotes a notable Philly-born “First” every week—like the first medical school, stadium, circus performance, flag, bank, and more. The “Firstivals” include an opening ceremony complete with Once Upon A Nation storytelling, family activities, giveaways, and entertainment. The events rotate through different Philadelphia neighborhoods and are free to attend.

Sail250® Flotilla

East Coast

July 4, 2026 

The Sail250® Flotilla is an impressive maritime display honoring two and a half centuries of independence at the Port of New York and New Jersey. It’ll feature 50 Class A and B sailing vessels representing over 20 countries, 50 U.S. and allied gray-hull naval warships, and distinguished water vessels like the Queen Mary 2. Thousands of private watercraft will join in the procession from the Verrazzano Bridge to the George Washington Bridge, while the Blue Angels soar majestically overhead.

Iowa State Fair’s “Spirit of ’76” Revival

August 13 – 23, 2026

For the Semiquincentennial, the legendary Iowa State Fair is reviving its 1976 theme, “Spirit of Iowa ‘76,” which inspired its Bicentennial theme. Attendees can find massive patriotic exhibits, modern innovators, and farm attractions focused on the country’s agricultural roots. Plus, competitive categories, such as baking, quilting, and photography, will have America250 ribbons.

“Freedom Plane National Tour”

Nationwide

March – August 2026 

History takes flight through the “Freedom Plane National Tour: Documents That Forged a Nation” traveling exhibition. Eight cities— Kansas City, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Houston, Denver, Miami, Dearborn, and Seattle—will bear witness to foundational documents and iconic artifacts transported via a Boeing 737 in Freedom Plane livery. Free and open to the public, visitors can view the original engraving of the Declaration of Independence (1823), Articles of Association (1774), Treaty of Paris (1783), Tally of Votes Approving the Constitution (1787), and more.

“Stories in the Sky”

September 2025 – December 2026 

Once-in-a-generation celebrations are going to new heights in Colorado. The state is hosting “Stories in the Sky,” a high-tech drone show that tells the tale of two birthdays: America’s 250th and Colorado’s 150th. From Denver to Telluride and everywhere in between, the series visits 150 communities and boasts over 400 drones that create anniversary-themed animations.

Arizona Liberty Bell Tour

Spring 2026 

The Grand Canyon State is ringing in the occasion with the Arizona Liberty Bell Tour. The full-size replica that normally sits in the State Capitol will be part of a mobile museum traveling in a custom-made semi-trailer across 15 counties. It’s a chance for rural and urban communities to enjoy an interactive experience that weaves Arizona’s unique story into the broader U.S. narrative.

America 250: A Musical Journey

Chicago, IL

June 2026 

America 250: A Musical Journey turns the celebration into a living soundtrack with a series at the Chicago Symphony Center. The programs represent the country’s resilience, creativity, and musical traditions. Highlights include a jazz show that fuses performances from the Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Conrad Tao’s recital with music by American composers, and a live-to-film orchestration of John Williams’ Star Wars: A New Hope.
